A proud milestone in Royal Palms Beach Hotel, Kalutara’s journey towards sustainability

Royal Palms Beach Hotel (RPBH), Kalutara, continues to redefine sustainable luxury in Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector. The hotel was the only property recognised in the Hotel Sector – Service Large Category at the National Cleaner Production Awards 2025, marking its third consecutive win and reaffirming its commitment to sustainability excellence.

Blending five-star comfort with strong environmental responsibility, RPBH offers 119 Deluxe Rooms and 10 Suites and holds key certifications, including ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 22000:2018, HACCP, Travelife Gold, and Sri Lanka’s first Eco Label Certification (EL-HS-1-2025). Sustainability is embedded throughout operations, from a 12R waste management system, which treats over 80% of waste, to recycling, composting, and water-efficient practices such as sensor taps, dual-flush toilets, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater recycling.

Energy efficiency and carbon reduction are central to RPBH’s strategy. The hotel utilises LED lighting, solar energy, heat pumps, and a 60 kW EV charger, complemented by guest awareness initiatives, achieving a 36% reduction in carbon footprint between 2015 and 2018. Efforts to eliminate single-use plastics include refillable toiletries, biodegradable packaging, and sustainable procurement, alongside initiatives to preserve biodiversity, support local communities, and drive education and awareness programmes.
